Ontario Farmers’ Markets Visited
by Gary McWilliams (aka Festival Nomad)
Judi and I love visiting Farmers’ Markets! Like agriculture fairs, community Farmers’ Markets can be found in also all Ontario communities. As they say, “where rural and urban meet“!
Farmers’ Market are especially popular in the fall. So much fresh produce is available during this time! However, some markets are available year round.
The photos shown below represent some of the Markets we have visited over the past few years.
Ottawa’s ByWard Market
The ByWard Market is a community within a community (Ottawa).
The ByWard Market offers visitor a variety of things to do and see, fresh produce stands, funky restaurants, unique shops and much more.
You really have to visit the ByWard Market to experience the whole effect of this amazing area. You should plan to stay and enjoy for a few days. Judi and I try to stay at one of the “boutique” hotels in the Market area.
Collingwood Farmers’ Market
The Collingwood Farmers’ Market is a great place to explore.
Like most Farmers’ Markets, the Collingwood Farmers’ Market changes each week.
Timing at the market determines what goods are being offered.
Goderich Markets (Farmers and Flea)
Goderich offers two type of markets. On Saturdays, there’s the Goderich Farmers’ Market, while on Sundays, there’s the Goderich Flea Market.
When we visited Goderich, we were able to explore the Goderich Flea Market.
The Goderich Markets are located on “The Square”. The Square is actually an octagon shaped downtown ring road that surrounds their historic courthouse. Like the ByWard Market in Ottawa, the Goderich Markets need to be visited in person to appreciate their uniqueness!
Keady Farmers’ Market
As I mentioned, many small communities have farmers’ markets. The small community of Keady is no exception. The Keady Farmers’ Market is very popular.
Our Toronto Festival Correspondent friends, Tom and Connie, were able to visit the Keady Farmers’ Market a few years ago.
Like many smaller markets, the Keady Farmers’ Market entertained visitor with a variety of “sights” and “sounds”.
Owen Sound Farmer’s Market
The Owen Sound Farmers’ Market is located right in the middle of the downtown area.
The Owen Sound Farmers’ Market prided itself on offering market visitors “locally grown produce, meat, eggs and baked goods“.
Unlike most farmers’ markets, the Owen Sound Farmers’ Market is open “year round”. It has its own market building that helps keep the “weather gods, at bay”!
McLean’s Berry Farms
The McLean family are always very busy! In addition to operating two berry farms and growing various farm products, they attend 6 area farmers’ markets! The McLean Berry Farms are one of our favourite places to visit!
McLean Berry Farm stores and farmers’ market booths offer visitors a wide variety of fresh produce.
The McLean Berry Farms berries are always fresh, whether you “pick your own” or buy them direct!
If you and your family are looking for a fun and healthy “adventure“, why not visit a Farmers’ Market in your area!
